Are you ready for SICM?

Well, are you ready to get good at chess? Really good?
And have fun while doing so?

The Summer Institute of Chess Mastery is for those students who are ready to develop their talent with a combination of practice, personal instruction, home study and tournament participation over the summer of 2015. Students in SICM set their own improvement goals, and then develop a plan to reach those goals. By summer's end you'll be an experienced chessplayer, ready to enjoy the benefits of chess for the remainder of your life.

The Four Elements of SICM:

  1. Weekly lunchtime chess lessons
  2. Daily chess exercise
  3. Competing in the Hot Summer Chess Grand Prix
  4. Competing in the SICM Students Online Championship

Element One: Lunch Lessons
These will take place at the new Ferndale Public Library in the conference room from 11:45 to 12:45. Students will be divided into five small groups, and each group will meet once a week.

Element Two: Home Study and Play
This is where you get good. We develop an improvement plan together. The key is to engage your chess brain each day. As a group, we'll get "on a streak" with our excellent online chess curriculum.

Element Three: Hot Summer Chess Grand Prix
Test what you're learning! Five trophies will be awarded to the players who rack up the most wins at all four Grand Prix tourneys in Bellingham and Ferndale combined. Go for it!

Element Four: SICM Students Online Championship
Each SICM student will participate in an online "correspondence" (slow) style tournament against seven other SICM students. In each game, a move must be made at least once every three days.

Who can join SICM:
Due to size constraints, the program is limited to Ferndale MS/HS students, as well as middle school students in the Blaine, Meridian and smaller school districts.

Cost:
There is no tuition fee. The lessons are free. (Yes, it is ridiculous.) There is a fee to cover the cost of materials, however. Each student will invest in one chess book, and will also cover the fees charged by our online curriculum providers. The total materials fee, $26, will be due at the SICM Orientation and First Lesson.

What is SACM?

SICM can only hold 30 students. SACM allows more students and their friends and relatives to play online with each other, develop their talent and enjoy summer chess, both on the web and in person.

You couldn't join SICM because it's full, or you're gone for half the summer?
You want to play online and improve with your friends enrolled in SICM?
You're a parent who wants to watch and learn too?
You're an uncle, grandma or younger brother of a SICM student and want to play online with them, even though you live in Minnesota?
Then SACM is for you!

The three elements of SACM:

  1. Membership in the SICM Online Chess Club
  2. Access to the SICM chess curriculum
  3. Competing in the Hot Summer Chess Grand Prix

Element One: Online Chess Club Membership
With SACM you will be automatically "friended" with all SICM and SACM students, and thus able to challenge them to online chess matches, both slow (one move every three days) and fast (live) chess. You'll see the SICM club news, memos and chat.

Element Two: SICM Chess Curriculum
Apply yourself here and get good, at your own pace. SICM students are enrolled in two online services. SACM students have access to both.

Element Three: Hot Summer Chess Grand Prix
If you're in Whatcom County, test what you're learning! Five trophies will be awarded to the players who rack up the most wins at all four Grand Prix tourneys in Bellingham and Ferndale combined. And medals for each section winner at each tournament. Go for it!

Who can join SACM?
Ferndale students, as well as middle school students in the Blaine, Meridian and smaller Whatcom County school districts. Also, any friends and relatives of SICM students, whether located nearby or far, far away.

When must I join?
You can join SACM anytime this summer.

Schedule:
Same as the SICM schedule above. If you've joined by June 9, come to the Orientation and First Lesson, 7pm June 9 at the Ferndale Library.

How to join SACM:
Fill out the SACM Online Registration Form and get the fee to Coach Kaech.

Cost:
The fee to cover the cost of both online services through August 31 is $12. (If purchased individually, without the group discount, they would cost $41.) You can deliver the funds to Coach in person at the Ferndale Post Office, or mail the fee to: Randy Kaech, PO Box 40, Ferndale WA 98248.
