Northwest League Checks State!

Black did not castle, and where does it get him?

(Full Crosstable Below)

Six high school teams from the Northwest Chess League competed in the 35th annual Washington State High School Team Chess Championships held Friday and Saturday, Feb. 23 and 24, 2001 at Issaquah High School.

A total of 42 of the best high school chess teams from around the state competed in this year's championship. To qualify for state, a team must post a winning record in their league.

Although none of the Northwest League teams placed in the top ten this year, the NWL was represented well as the majority of NWL teams posted a winning or even score. Stuart Moore of Sehome went undefeated, and Ferndale's David Laundry earned both the Freshman Bronze Medal and the Upset Award in the Junior Varsity division.

High school chess in our area is young and growing. Three years ago the Northwest League came into existence, becoming the newest WHSCA league, providing league chess competition for high schools in Whatcom and Skagit counties.

A special guest appearance and speech by Yasser Seirawan, current U.S. Chess Champion, International Grandmaster and co-founder of the Seattle Chess Foundation, was the highlight of the awards ceremony. Grandmaster Seirawan also assisted in the presentation of trophies.

Point totals for the NWL teams are given below. One point is awarded for a win, one-half for a draw, and zero points for a loss. When the full crosstable with post-event ratings is made available to us, we'll post that here as well.

Ratings based on fewer than 15 games are provisional and do not accurately reflect comparable competitive performance. Ratings based on 15 and more games are established and tend to be accurate and predictive. The unreliability of ratings is especially pronounced when based on very few games.

All coaches and players are asked to check these crosstables carefully and to make all inquiries with the ratings statistician: Ollie LaFreniere, (206) 783-3815. olliechess@home.com

The 35th annual High School State Championship is history, with defending champions Lakeside School repeating for a second title. In unprecedented fashion the Lakeside B team took second place. In the forced pairing between the two powerhouses, Lakeside A gave up one its two losses when Jeremy Weiss defeated the A team's Aaron Spinks on board 2. Nor could Captain Steven Kwan do more than make a draw against his B team brother Alan Kwan.

Third place Columbia River's Andrew Svehaug administered the second loss to Steven Kwan as this independent Vancouver team made it first foray into State Team a highly successful one.

The twelve trophy places were replete with league champions (see crosstable): Lakeside A (Metro), Meadowdale (WESCO), Yelm (TAPCO), Issaquah A (KingCo), Foster A (Puget Sound). Seattle's Metro League also showed dominant power, taking fully one half of the trophy places.

One greatly observed game featured a gigantic time scramble between Garfield's Anna Tonkonogui and highly rated JP Sarausad of Edmonds-Woodway. When Anna claimed insufficient losing changes in an "indeterminate" position, Chief Floor TD LaFreniere chose to put in a digital clock set with a 5 second delay and very little time remaining for Anna. She successfully defended the draw, and when the pieces started flying around the table with Anna at 4 seconds and JP at 9 seconds remaining, the TD declared the draw. Applause followed all this excitement.

In the JV INDIVIDUAL CHAMPIONSHIP last year's best two of three speed playoff among two perfect scoring winners was repeated, again with two Lakeside players. And again a freshman won the title: freshman Keith Morse took two of the three games over senior Eric Winder. Eric bemoaned this twist of fate; these would be his last games of high school chess.

Teams came from every corner of the state for this one: Pullman, Chewelah, good support from Spokane, Lynden, there's high school chess life again in the Vancouver area. Especially noteworthy was the terrific support from the Northwest League (Mount Vernon and on north). And of course, the usual powerful contingent from the Puget Sound area was present.

The tournament ran well with some glaring exceptions. Chief Floor Arbiter Ollie LaFreniere kept things well under control, assisted by WHSCA staff Paul Zurybida and Jay Zettervall. Secretaries Michael Dossett and Mon-Chaio Lo did an outstanding job. Host Jay Radmer produced a fine site, keeping a gym open for players; he was busy the whole time. Next year he promises to bring in more tables to reduce the crowding, and to provide a workable microphone.

Highly embarrassing to the Chief TD was a lengthy wait for the posting of first round JV pairings, resulting in a 50 minute delay in tournament start time. This is intolerable, given that a second round must be played Friday night, and then players, many of whom had an hour or more to travel each direction, had to reappear for round three bright and early at 9 a.m. Saturday. This caused a considerable reaction among coaches: they voted to start the tournament one half hour earlier next year.

We did make one tiny step forward this year: we produced the team pairings on a word processor so they could be posted several places. It is possible, but not really probable, that we will pair the varsity team section via computer next year. Programs are available that will do that for us. It is the quite complex rules of our own tournament that introduce the many difficulties. If, however, we do make that progress, we'll have nicely printed wall charts available every round, and an easy way to interface the results with the WSRS ratings program, instead of the lengthy hand entry of all data, for which we thank Geoff Findlay this year.

On to the next chess season! -- reported by Ollie LaFreniere
